Don't waste the parallel port on your inkjet, laser, or high speed printer. This cable uses the USB port on your PC or hub, so your parallel port remains free for a zip drive or scanner. Forget the hassles of IRQ sharing by adapting your printer to USB. If you have multiple printers, you can eliminate the need for a switchbox by connecting each printer to a USB port.

The device is fully transparent to the user, and is ideal for true bi-directional communication. This adapter auto-negotiates hardware recognition for faster protocol setup, and is fully plug-and-play compatible. This adapter cable is a perfect accessory for Microsoft® Surface® products and other leading laptops.

Note: This adapter is designed for use with a standard Parallel printer and is not designed to support multi-function printers or other parallel devices. This adapter uses the USB Printing Support function of the operating system and is not designed to create a LPT port.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does not work on some printers. When I bought a new computer, it didn't have a parallel port for my HP 6L laser printer. This cable appeared to be the best option to keep running my old laser printer. But I find that this is one model that these cables evidently are ineffective on. Do a web search first to see if this cable will work on your printer. I searched after finding it wouldn't work, and it became obvious that there is something about this model of printer, and evidently a few others, that is incompatible with these types of cables. Nothing against this cable, I just should have done my homework first.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works EXACTLY as described I saw some comments saying that it was incompatible with their HP LaserJet printers. I wanted folks to know that it absolutely, positively works with LaserJet 4000 & 4050 printers. Bought 2 cables. My only con is that it is 6' so I had to rearrange one of the work areas. If you read and follow the directions to the tee, it will work exactly as described. Pinky swear. The first installation I did, I skipped a step and it didn't work. Note: use Windows Update to grab the printer where applicable if it isn't on the list

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would heartily recomend this product. Good performance! It is being used to connect an older printer to my new computer via a USB port.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Windows 8 Compatible A quality product, not sure about its future as parallel ports are rapidly disappearing from all products & being replaced by USB ports. I bought this to connect an old workhorse printer; unfortunately, the manufacturer no longer provides updated drivers that work with new PC running Windows 8. Thought this cable would provide the solution, but it didn't.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not work on Windows 7 A good product for Windows XP but not Windows 7. It shows up as an "unspecified device" and will not print to a Laserjet 4M.

Questions & Answers

I have Windows7 Pro and a HP 722C printer. In my search for a parallel-to-USB cable, I notice some come with driver(s) on a disc while others do not. Is there an advantage with the disc vs the Windows7 drivers?

Asked by: Pj
It really depends. I know the HP722C requires a patch for Windows 7 64 bit OS. This would be regardless of the adapters with CD drivers or not. Our adapter would not require a driver because it uses a built in Windows driver. Here is a link to the patch for HP Deskjet 722C: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Software/Deskjet-710-720-810-820-1000-Series-printers-Patch-for-64-bit/m-p/203377#U203377

Asked by: Gary
If that printer uses a generic built in Windows 8 driver, it should work with our adapter. We have not tested that exact printer with the adapter so we cannot say for certain that it is compatible.

Will this cable (USB-IEEE1294) work with my Gateway MX6422 laptop and an HP OfficeJet 600 all-in-one printer/fax/scanner/copier? The laptop is running Windows XP and has 4 USB ports but no parallel port. My only functional requirement is printing; I can live without the fax/scanner/copier functions, but of course they would be nice to have.
Asked by: MadDog
I would not recommend using that All in one device with the USB to parallel adapter. That adapter only works with standard printers not multifunction devices. The only product we would have is a parallel PCI card #16645.

Will it work with a Windows 7 operating system that only has USB outputs on the mother board. If so, when selecting an HP LaserJet printer that requires a parallel port output from a D-25 connector, what port do you select... from the options... a USB port or a parallel printer port that is not on the machine? If you select a USB port, will the printer driver work since it expects a parallel printer (LPT1) port selection.
Asked by: KIRK
Yes, it does work with a Windows 7 computer that only has USB ports. The port you would select to print to would be a USB virtual port like USB001 or USB002, etc. If the printer driver for you model of printer is built into the Windows 7 OS, that driver would still work with the USB port.

I’ve printed from two Windows 7 notebooks to two older LaserJets (a ‘4P and a ‘6P) via a (non-CablesToGo) USB to parallel printer cable for over a year – until recently, when the '4P quit responding to any/all attempts to print from either Windows 7 notebook (even after COMPLETELY uninstalling and re-installing the printer/driver). I have a new (unused and still in the box) CablesToGo USB to parallel printer cable (“PortAuthority2” per the box; bar code 7 57120 16898 0) I bought six years ago that APPEARS to be the same as your current #16898 (the installation CD label lists “USB to Parallel Adapter #16898” along with some other adapter cables). Per your Website, the #16898 is Windows 7 compatible, so I hope this cable will resolve this new printing problem, but want to verify that the specs and/or compatibility for a six-year-old “PortAuthority2” cable do/do not match those of a new #16898 sufficiently to resolve the issue. Please advise, and thanks for your assistance.
Asked by: Anonymous
It might not match exactly but it should be compatible with Windows 7.

Asked by: MJT
No. It will not be recognized as an LPT port. Our adapter will be recognized as USB printing support. So you would be printing to a virtual USB port. We unfortunately do not have a USB to parallel adapter that will be recognized as an LPT port.

Our adapter cable is designed to work with standard printers. It works best with generic built in Windows printer drivers. Plotters normally require specific drivers from the manufacturer which can have been known to have problems when using our USB to parallel adapter.
