When a standard USB cable cannot transfer enough power to operate an external device, such as a portable 2.5in hard drive, you need a USB 2.0 y-cable. Simply plug this cable's USB Mini-b end into the device, and then plug the two USB A ends into open USB ports on one PC or Mac. This cable then pulls power from both USB ports, and thus increases the output to the external drive.

The red molded hood on the auxiliary USB A connector enables the user to quickly distinguish between main and auxiliary power. Foil and braid shielding reduces EMI/RFI interference, and twisted pair construction reduces crosstalk for high speed, error-free data transfer. This cable is compatible with USB 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 specifications.

Please Note: This cable is not designed to split USB signals to multiple computers. The two USB A connectors are meant to plug into USB ports on the same computer. Furthermore, thanks to customer feedback, we have extended the length of the arms of the Y from 9 to 12 inches.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solved my problem. I had a problem getting my WD My Passport external drive to work with my PowerBook G4. I finally found a comment on-line that the problem was that the G4 USB port did not supply enough current for the Passport. This cable allows me to get power from both USB ports and seems to work fine. I had to buy an extra mini USB to micro USB adapter (would be nice if there was a micro USB version of the cable) and the cords are a little short but they do work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SAVED!!!! This cable replaced the one that came with my external hard drive. The flimsy cable that came with my hard drive was not functioning so I thought I had lost everything on my external hard drive. I was saved by this new cable. It is very obviously much sturdier than my original cable and no doubt it will last longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Stuff! Needed the Y-cable to power my new Toshiba external hard drive. No one had what I needed...Not Apple, not Radio Shack, no one. Cables to Go had exactly the right cable at the right length at the right price. Awesome!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, one caveat Good cable but the arms of the "Y" are too short. They should be 18" long.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, but Y is too short Great cable for use on removable HD on a 17" Powerbook except the arms of the Y aren't long enough to stretch across both sides of the laptop where the two USB ports are. I would also be interested in a micro USB Y cable for the same application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Portable hard drive necessity External portable hard drives especially require this cable to function correctly because of the USB port current limit. I am very pleased with the heavier cable construction and reinforcement protection at the cable junction point. Quality color coded connectors allow for the cable to remain attached to the computer and plug in the correct added power connector when needed freeing up a USB port.

Questions & Answers

I WANT TO CONNECT AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO MY TABLET, WHICH USB Y CABLE DO I NEED ?

Asked by: DENNIS
The black USB connector is for data and the red would strictly be for power. You would need to connect the red cable to a different USB port so it can properly power the hard drive.

Does this product support external hard drives over 80GB? I've found that many of the (cheap) Asian imports do not, so I wanted to be sure before purchasing. Thank you

If the computer only has one USB port available, can the red power side be plugged into a charger for power?

Asked by: Glenn
You can as the Red is only pinned for power, however I would also suggest a USB powered hub.
