I would recommend for any laptop with a dispay port
It allows me to use a large flat panel monitor to watch movies stored on my laptop when traveling. Many laptops no longer have a HDMI or VGA output. Mine like many now only have a display port. This is a simple and cheap means to achieve a bridge to HDMI. The item is so small and affordable, that I intend to order another just in case I forget to pack it.

Great solution!
It’s made working from home a breeze. To be able to connect my laptop to my tv makes working excel sheets very easy to read. I already had a6ft hdmi cord so to be able to buy the adapter was the easy fix to not wanting to read everything on my laptop monitor. The only thing I’d do differently is purchase their 10ft cord with data tip and hdmi tip where it’s all built in and I can sit on the couch and the cord be long enough to still be connected to the tv.

I needed this and they were the only ones that had it, then I found that the pc I bought came with one in the package so now I have two and I'm going to put two screens up!!

Display port but no HDMI port?
Here is the simple solution, a short cable with the requisite connections. The male display port plug has latching teeth so it won't wiggle loose.

The specs state HD but not 4K... is this actually the case or does it pass 4K?
This one does not pass 4k and only does 1080. If you need one that will pass 4k then you would want to look at the C2G 54431

This adapter is only for connecting a DP connection on a PC to HDMI Display.

Is this an 'active' or a 'passive' adapter? (ie. Will connecting this cable to my graphics card allow me to use the connected display as a third monitor?)
This is a passive adapter. Depending on your graphics card and Operating system then yes this could be used to provide you a third display.

Mac will typically use Mini DisplayPort. If the Mac does have a DIsplayPort connection then this will work perfectly.
