Rated 4 out of 5 by from EVERYONE WITH A PC SHOULD HAVE ONE HANDY - EASY TO USE - INEXPENSIVE If you are having trouble getting a drive letter to show up and you are connecting an IDE drive... CHECK the DRIVE FOR JUMPERS! Initially I couldn't get a drive letter. When I connected the drive & powered the cable my computer would detect the usb mass storage device, but wouldn't assign a drive letter. I only got 1 out of 10 old IDE drives to work. After a few moments of frustration, I quickly realized that the 1 that DID work had no jumpers and the drives that did not work indeed had jumpers. I removed all jumpers and Voila - instant drive letters. I was then easily able to retrieve my old data.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great time saver! I am using it to access files from my old computer Hard Drive while I configure and transfer the files I need to keep on my "new" computer. I don't want all the junk files I have collected on the new machine, but I don't want to take the time to sort all the files before moving. This way I have my old drive as an external but readily accessible location for the files I need as I make the transition to the new machine. One negative issue: while testing the cable I tried several old Hard Drives I had lying around and it only worked on the fully functional ones. i.e. If a drive wasn't formatted it wasn't recognized. It works for me . . .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good to Go I recently junked a six year old PowerMac, but wanted to make sure I did not lose the data. No longer having an updated version of the OS I needed to run it, nor a monitor/keyboard combo to access it, I purchase the USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter. I removed the hard disk from the PowerMac and recycled the system at with chain retailer for free. The adapter allowed me to access the disk from my MacBook Pro and copy the data without a glitch. Now that the data is safe, I can destroy the hard disk and be comfortable that I have not lost data and no one else can access it without my permission.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Love cables. Wish they were more reliable I use this cable fairly frequently for data recovery from disks where the operating system has been corrupted. It's a great design concept, but I'm on my fourth set of cables due to various failures, from the power switch to the main adapter box. Basically, it needs to be more rugged and reinforced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy With Product My wife's computer died. She had lots of data on the internal C drive she wanted. I purchased a new laptop for her. Then, I bought this product to connect her old c drive to the new laptop through the USB port. Product worked perfectly. Still using old c drive as her new external drive.

Questions & Answers

How can I get this to work with my old laptops HDD? I bought this thinking it would work with it but the pins are different. HDD model # is MHZ2250BH G2.

Asked by: Anonymous
The MHZ2250BH G2 is a SATA hard drive. You should be able to use the provided short SATA cable to connect on the end of the 30504 adapter and then the other end onto your hard drive. You may need to remove the plastic end of the hard drive to get the connector to fit.

When I plug this device into a 2.5 ATA/IDE hard drive, the side of the device that plugs in leaves four pins bare. Is this supposed to happen? I am getting an I/O device error. Thanks!

Asked by: JCHINOKC
Yes. There should be 4 pins that are not connected to our adapter. Those would be the jumper pins. I would recommend connecting the USB adapter to a powered USB hub to make sure it is getting the full 500mA needed to power the laptop hard drive.

how do u use this adapter to get data off a old drive every time that i hook it up it wants me to format the drive but that would erase all the file off the drive thanks

Asked by: pimpdnice
It sounds like the computer cannot read the format of the old drive. I would recommend trying to connect a different drive with our adapter to see if you get the same results.

Does the Sata connector plug into the MB and plug the USB connector in at the samne time?

Asked by: Jay
There are 2 connections to make from the SATA hard drive. One would connect the 7 pin Data cable to the top of the USB to SATA adapter. The other would be the 15 pin SATA power cable that would plug into a wall outlet. Then you would connect the USB from the adapter into the computer that you are connecting to the SATA hard drive.

The adapter supports all existing IDE/ATAPI devices such as Iomega® Zip®, CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM and IDE hard drives. Compatible with current drive sizes on the market such as 1 and 2 TB SATA and 750 GB IDE drives. It uses a JM20337 chipset, so a driver update may be needed.

I have a 1 TB Western Digital Portable Passport harddrive, that no longer works. Purchased this product in order to recover the files but the cables do not seem to match up with the connections of the drive itself. This drive does not need an external power supply as it draws power through the USB connection.
