The two key components that apply to what we coin as the digital transition, are the "actual analog sunset"—which specifically refers to Blu-ray disc players and copyright protection, and the computer industry's drive to remove VGA connections from new laptops and PCs.
The transition to digital presents real challenges when new equipment is expected to be used with existing equipment. The key is making the proper technology investment to bridge the gap between analog and digital, while extending the useful life of the current equipment.

Connecting New Devices to Old Displays
Seamless point to point connection between devices and displays will occur less frequently during the digital transition as technology refreshes occur in various stages. (Technological advancements and budgets established for technology updates mean that devices and displays will likely have varying connections which are not directly compatible). In most situations, the rate at which sources such as laptops, PCs, DVD or Blu-ray players, and gaming consoles are upgraded occurs more often than that of projectors and displays. The newer devices will output a digital signal to older displays, where the digital signal must be converted to an analog signal.
Connecting Legacy Devices to New Displays
As technology continues to evolve, many will be faced with the reality that the outputs of their source devices may not match the inputs of a new display. Budgets may only allow for an update to certain technology pieces at the present time—so displays could be refreshed before source devices due to cost conscious efforts. Additionally, display failure or the mere need for higher resolution may drive replacement. Even more often, transient users or presenters may bring in older hardware which must be connected to new technology in the room. When the displays are equipped with digital connections, as they all will be moving forward, connecting the existing legacy devices will become increasingly difficult —as the connections on those devices will not match those of newer technology. These situations can make it seem impossible to transmit content from existing laptops, PCs, DVD players, gaming consoles, etc. to newer HDMI-enabled displays, and buying new equipment may seem like the only solution—but it's not.
Connecting New Devices to New Displays
Even in light of the digital transition where all connections will support only digital video signals, connecting new technologies such as a device to a display can still cause some headaches. There are differing digital connections that could be present within the source device and display which would require a cable or adapter to make the connection.
Supporting Legacy Cabling
In installations that take place in retrofit environments, existing infrastructure is present and needs to be considered. Supporting legacy cabling may be the only means to make the application work; however, technology upgrades to source devices and displays may make the install seem impossibleto accommodate.
