(based on 31 ratings)
Brand: Cables To Go
Located in: Devices
Our aluminum hub conveniently adds seven high speed USB 2.0 ports to your desktop or laptop computer. The slim form factor saves space while the port placement and hard-mountable metal base keep the hub in place even when several USB devices are connected. The removable aluminum base can be hard-mounted to your desk. The hub easily slides from that base, and makes it convenient for travel as well. This hub must be powered by the included AC power supply adapter. Downstream ports have automatic connect and speed detection plus overcurrent protection with auto recovery. Add additional hubs to daisy-chain up to 127 devices. USB-IF certification ensures high speed data transfers up to 480 Mbps. Whether you are downloading or transferring spreadsheets, MP3 files, digital pictures, or video streams, our 7-port hub makes connecting several high speed USB 2.0 devices hassle-free. ****   IMPORTANT UPDATE!  6-29-2010 The power supply is required for proper operation of the hub. The power supply for the hub must be used in order for the hub to function properly. To connect the hub, you must first connect the power supply to the hub, and then to an AC wall outlet. After the hub is powered you will need to connect the hub to an available USB port on the computer using the provided USB cable. Once the hub is connected to the computer, you will then connect all of your USB devices. Please note that it may take up to 30 seconds for devices to be recognized by the computer. The amount of time required to recognize the device will depend upon the speed of your computer. Please note that your devices will not function until they are fully recognized by the computer. **** Input: One 5V/2A Power Male and Seven USB Type A Female Output: One USB Type B Female

Mounted this to my desk and never gave me any problems. Since I have owned it (more then 3 years) I have built 4 different PCs and it never gave me any compatabity issues be it Win XP, Vista, or 7.

So, three years with 6 - 7 devices always connected and no issues ... how can I give it anything less then 5/5?

PS: I also have to say that it does go well with all the other black w/blue backlight peripherals I have for my PC.

Comments about Cables To Go 7-Port USB 2.0 Aluminum Hub:

when i first got this a couple months ago i only used it to connect a small portable drive and it managed ok. now in a new place and trying to use four of its ports to connect four drives, it immediately started having problems.
i have two ext port usb powered 1T drives and two larger desktop ext drives (with their own power supply) that needed to be connected into the network at the airport. it immediately could not handle both 1T usb drives at the same time causing them both to eject improperly the few times i tried it.
then it looked like it could handle the two large desktop drives and one usb 1T, until i tried to look at some large tiff files off one desktop, which took about a minute to read, soon all three stopped being responsive all together. now not even one is responsive when connected to the hub. very disappointing.
i am also not impressed with the usb cord or the power supply that are included with the product, both seem flimsy with insecure connectivity.

Comments about Cables To Go 7-Port USB 2.0 Aluminum Hub:

I bought it a couple weeks ago, it was the best value for the number of ports I needed. BUT, it's been really flakey. It will just sit there with noting plugged into it and cause the USB detection of VISTA to cycle as if it's detecting new devices. And when I do plug in devices into it, when the unit "cycles" those devices "cycle" too. I have the AC Adapter plugged into it as suggested, but find it strange that it will work fine for an hour or so, then start it's "freak out" process. Not sure I'd recommend it to anyone else .. yet..

Comments about Cables To Go 7-Port USB 2.0 Aluminum Hub:

Like many others here, I thought this seemed like an excellent product when first purchased (unfortunately over a year ago) but within weeks the ports started to intermittently fail. By that I mean that they randomly dropped connections regardless of the devices plugged in. I ALWAYS used it while using the AC adapter. The more devices connected , the less reliable it got. I eventually got annoyed enough that I just stopped using it. A few months ago I bought an almost identical hub branded by another vendor. There are only 2 differences: 1) The new hub's adapter is 5V/3A instead of the 5V/2A used by the CTG hub and 2) the new one works reliably. I'm betting CTG skimped on the power supply. Please stop "investigating" and issue a recall of these obviously defective products.

Comments about Cables To Go 7-Port USB 2.0 Aluminum Hub:

Bought this hub to add devices since my iMac has only three USB ports. Love the design, and the pad that allows you to mount it (still removable) to the desktop is very nice. Even without that, it tends to stay where you put it. Having ports on both the front and back is great.

I am giving it two stars because I really want to recommend this hub, but unfortunately it has developed some serious issues.

I am using the hub to connect a couple of (non-powered) portable USB hard drives, a scanner, and occasionally cameras, etc. The hub worked great at first, but occasionally it seemed that some ports would not recognize a device when plugged in. Recently it has developed an issue where plugging in another device will cause it to drop currently existing devices - most notably one of the portable drives, causing it to be dismounted. This is more than inconvenient, as repeated incorrect dismounting of the drive can cause data loss or drive failure.

I would love to see this issue corrected, as it's a great hub otherwise, but in the mean time I would have to caution against using it with external drives - just too risky.

Comments about Cables To Go 7-Port USB 2.0 Aluminum Hub:

I've tried many brands of hubs over the years, many of which have failed. This hub is sturdy, small, and reliable. I have two of them mounted on the underside of my desk. This is the hub I recommend to my clients (I'm a Mac consultant), who also seem happy with it. As others have noted, the hub slides out of the base too easily; I just padded it with some paper layers to add friction. Also, at least two of my clients have (against my advice) read the instructions and set it up without the AC adapter, which they then proceed to lose track of. Some devices need the extra power. Customer Support has been very responsive in getting me replacement AC adapters, and they do seem to respond positively to complaints posted here.

Comments about Cables To Go 7-Port USB 2.0 Aluminum Hub:

I bought this hub through [...] specifically because it was the only one I could find that came with a mountable base. When I received it I was thrilled; it mounted easily, looked great, and worked well. Then within weeks out of nowhere my keyboard and mouse that were hooked up to it would not work. Not realizing the unit had simply croaked, I tried everything I could think of to revive it. I plugged the hub into a different port on my mac, that did nothing. I plugged the mouse into every port on the hub and that did nothing. Finally I hooked the mouse up to the Mac directly and it worked instantly, then I was sure this unit had failed. [...] That one too worked great when I first got it. But exactly like the first it failed too within weeks. This unit has so much potential but judging by the flood of recent reviews all talking about it failing, there is clearly a major problem with this unit.

I have had other hubs that failed. I have 3 of these, 2 on the desktop and one on the laptop. They have worked without a hitch. They don't take much space. The side with 3 ports is good for using thumb drives because they are wider than most wires and can have a problem on the 4 port side.
Like all of my stuff, they are plugged into a UPS.
There are never any power glitches.

They do slide out of the base too easily but tape takes care of that.

I wouldn't buy anything else if I needed another one.

I have two of these on my personal computer at home and two on my work pc for over one year. They are quick to set up, reliable and are very useful in connecting cables in the back with front ports open for flash drive, camera, BlackBerry, etc. connections. I STRONGLY recommend that you connect these to a main USB port in the back of your computer - not a front port or another hub. This provides direct and reliable USB connections.

I wish I'd seen the reviews already on here before I bought this, because mine failed in just a couple weeks time! Three of the seven ports still work, but I imagine they will fail soon. Interestingly, I see they don't list it as Vista compatible (just XP and prior), but it worked fine with Vista and Windows 7 for those two weeks. If they can't make something as simple as a USB hub work with Vista after all this time, I have serious doubts about this company in general. Buyer beware!

This was reviewed well elsewhere and bought it.

People have been reviewing too soon.

I would have said get it, (during the first few months it worked) but if I have to buy two or three a year it really isn't worth it is it?

Please do not be misled by posotive reviews.

Yes it works well when it works, but it will break down on you very soon.

The only people that should buy this are those needing a temporary fix for a few months and are willing to take the loss, but even they might be better served getting something more reliable.

Sorry for the bad news.

Cables To Go Response: We are sorry that the hub has failed. A member of our Tech Support team will contact you to resolve the issue.

Seeing how they deal with warranty at the moment. May update the rating later as any device can malfunction, but its up to customer service at this point.
