IEEE-1394, also known as FireWire, iLink® or DV, is a versatile, high-speed, and low cost method of interconnecting a variety of computer peripherals and consumer electronics devices. FireWire provides a direct digital link among up to 63 devices, with transfer speeds up to 400 Mbps. Digital video (DV) camcorders, scanners, printers, videoconferencing cameras, and fixed disk drives can all share a common bus connection not only to a PC, but to each other as well. Works less than 50% of time, very loose fitting inside any 6pin firewire ports. Swapped with different brand of cables & works fine!! Save your money & buy another brand.

Since Sony doesn't offer driver downloads for Windows 7 to enable downloading digital video taken with their camcorders via usb cords, the IEEE 1394 (aka Firewire) is the only alternative for those of us with this newer Microsoft os. With this cable, which appears to be well made with reasonably robust connectors, one can plug and play using either Windows Media or HP's version to directly download digital video from Sony digital camcorders.

these cables are being used in a high school class room situation to connect to Mac computers (G5) and so far I am extremely impressed as the cables have lasted and one has been stolen already which means the students recognize their value!
