Comments about Cables To Go 18in Port Authority USB Serial DB9 Adapter Cable:

product fails to communicate with older devices that have higher RS232 signal levels. This device has a TX signal level of about -6.4 volts. Older devices range from -10 to -12 volts. The signal level in the older devices appears to hang the hardware and then the Windows Device driver as well. Works well with newer device that have compatible signal voltage levels.

Comments about Cables To Go 18in Port Authority USB Serial DB9 Adapter Cable:

I use this product several times a week in my job, and so do some of my coworkers. The product is nice for us because our laptops do not have Serial ports, so we use this product to console into networking equipment.

The biggest issue I have with this product is the drivers for it. I use Windows 7 64-bit and so do my coworkers. This device will almost always (4 out of 5 times) bluescreen my laptop, especially when I'm in debug mode or if I'm receiving a lot of info from the console. I have tried the last three versions of the drivers and none of them have helped the bluescreen issues.

CablesToGo: Please, PLEASE fix the issues this device has with Windows 7 64-bit. If a new driver is not released soon, my coworkers and I will have to find a more compatible product.

Cables To Go Response: We have been working with Cal regarding this issue. As the problem does not occur all the time, it is difficult for us to pinpoint. We are waiting for more information from him so we can investigate further.

Comments about Cables To Go 18in Port Authority USB Serial DB9 Adapter Cable:

This cable works! I have a older model Zebra LP 2844 thermal label printer with a serial port but no USB port. The cable allowed me to connect the 2844 printer to a Dell laptop or my Apple Mac Mini running Parallels and Windows XP and print shipping labels. Before connecting the cable make sure you use the installation disk and install the driver software first. Then reboot, and then connect the cable and Windows will install it. Then connect the cable to your printer and install your 2844 printer by going to control panel and add new hardware. If your printer happens to be already installed you may have to delete it and reinstall it. When you reinstall it, XP will give you the option of picking which port to install it to. Check to see which port your computer installed the adapter cable on and use that port for your printer installation. On my computer it was COM 3. It is essential you pick the correct port. Note that if you print a test label it may or may not look so great. So if you have a UPS account, go to their website and run through their thermal printer installation process which installs print drivers for the 2844 and an Active X control. Print a test label. The labels will look great!

64 bit drivers cause BSOD

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Cables To Go 18in Port Authority USB Serial DB9 Adapter Cable:

Like someone else stated, the 64 bit drivers (version 3.0.2) are unreliable, they cause a blue screen of death with multiple-IRP_complete_requests error and this happens at 115.200 bps. The other user had the same problem at a slower speed. This problem makes the product unusable on 64 bit operating systems.

Comments about Cables To Go 18in Port Authority USB Serial DB9 Adapter Cable:

One of its strongest features is the "prolific" driver it ships with. It suppports "full hardware handshaking" (which many other USB/Ser converters DON'T) as well as 7 bit data which is also sometimes a problem with other converters. This is the only one I use and it works in EVERY situation I've run across which has not been my experience with other converters.

This works great as long as you are on XP 32-bit. If you are on a 64-bit machine it will BSOD your box when you run at a speed of 19200. No matter what I plug it into, speed 19200 works for about 1 min then I get a BSOD with Multiple_IRP_Request errors.

I have a windows vista lap top, I was concerned if the vista would support the cable. I loaded the drivers from the included CD and presto it works great. Just what I needed it to do. So as we know the USB is the in thing, this cable will bring you up to par that works.

I used this to tune an old shure DFR EQ fedback reducer with a serial port. Once I got the drivers installed (which you can download from the cables to go tech page) it worked great. It's a little short for that use since the port is in the back but I just used a usb extension and I was fine.

I needed a Serial-2-USB converter to connect my Palm III to my laptop (no serial port). First bought a unit from [...]but the Palm software didn't recognize it. One of my collegues uses this product with a security system controller and suggested I try it. Loaded the driver and plugged it in. Worked first time out and now I can update my Palm III without problems.Haven't seen a downside to the product yet! Thanks.

Comments about Cables To Go 18in Port Authority USB Serial DB9 Adapter Cable:

This product was recommended to me by Schlage security systems to convert their serial cable to our USB computer port. Not any cable would work. I found that this cable worked after buying others. If you need commercial quality like we do for our security system, this adapter is great. You can't have one problem when dealing with security, and this cable absolutely works. Also, great technical support if you have compatibity problems. My software had a wrong setting which they and Schlage helped me figure out the problem. Great cable !!!!!!!!!!

Comments about Cables To Go 18in Port Authority USB Serial DB9 Adapter Cable:

I needed this adapter to connect a (home automation device) CM11A X10 serial interface to my Vista machine which had no serial ports. This works flawlessly and I felt was purcased for a fair price. The only negative comment I can make is that it did not come with software drivers. My Vista Home Premium machine was able to find the driver for me online as part of the "found new hardware process, however I feel that someone other than a "power user" may have not been successful at that point and would have needed support. All in all a great product however and I continue to be happy to do business with this company.
