I have a new TV which only has an optical output and a sound system that has a coaxial input. It works for awhile, but after a couple of hours the sounds are slightly off from what I am seeing on the screen.
Mouths move and then a second later you hear the words. I haven't used other types of these so I have nothing to compare it to. It works, but in order to use it for a couple of hours or more, you must reset it by unplugging it and plugging it back in.
Comments about Cables To Go Optical to Coaxial Digital Audio Converter:
This product and its coax to fiber partner are advertised as converters to deal with a shortage of jacks of either the fiber or coax variety. However, I purchased this as way to carry multichannel audio from an optical port on a Satellite receiver to a 5.1 channel reveiver/amplifier separated by about 75 feet of cable length. I was able to run a custom length of coax very easily to the Sony receiver's coax digital audio jack and use a short fiber optic cable to complete the connection on the satellite end. This saved me the expense of the long fiber cable (not custom length) as well as the worry about kinking or otherwise damaging the fiber.Note: I had read a comment on a site selling a similar product that warned the digital audio signal coming out of the coax side of the converter might not be compatible with the coaxial digital audio inputs on some receivers. Fortunately, I found this not to be true: Dolby Digital 5.1 is working perfectly from a [...] box to a low-end Sony receiver.

A great product if you have run out of Toslink/Fiber Optic inputs but still have open S-PDIF/Digital Coaxial inputs on your Theater Receiver/computer.

When you are already wired with coax this is a much better solution than running 60 feet of new fiber optic line. SPDIF coax may not be as good as fiber optic but when you need a long run like I did and already have the coax in place this is absolutely the right choice. It handles all encooding options I have tried through Dolby DTS. No detectable quality loss.I was extremely pleased to find this adapter at Cables To Go. [...]

I do digital recordings of sampled pipe organs using Hauptwerk. I use a Mac Pro (Intel). I needed a way to go from the Mac's digital optical output to a Lexicon Reverb. unit's digital coaxial input so my recordings could be digital all the way. I searched locally, but no one had heard of such an adapter. But, to my surprise and delight, CablesToGo carries such an unusual device.
It works just great. . . exactly what I needed.
Thanks.

This saved me the cost of a new receiver minus the minimal cost of the device. Easy to use, just plug in the optical from the transmitting device (Plasma TV in my case), plug in coax from the device to the Coax Digital input on the receiver, plug into AC power, and everything works. Perfect. I don't think about it at all.

Even though the sales guy swore on a stack of Bibles that all of the components he recommended for our set-up had all the necessary I/O, it did not.
This adapter saved us on this one.
Set it, forget it.
