This is a great help in obtaining files from removed HD's. The connections are simple, works as hoped and does a great job. Very fast, very simple. The drive is always recognized. This is a fast effecient way to get data off removed drives. The on/off swich is a very nice touch. Wouldn't be without it.

HANDY - EASY TO USE - INEXPENSIVE

If you are having trouble getting a drive letter to show up and you are connecting an IDE drive...
CHECK the DRIVE FOR JUMPERS!

Initially I couldn't get a drive letter.
When I connected the drive & powered the cable my computer would detect the usb mass storage device, but wouldn't assign a drive letter. I only got 1 out of 10 old IDE drives to work. After a few moments of frustration, I quickly realized that the 1 that DID work had no jumpers and the drives that did not work indeed had jumpers. I removed all jumpers and Voila - instant drive letters. I was then easily able to retrieve my old data.

I am using the adapter to connect my old dead computer's hard drives (IDE 120 Megs) to my new computer via USB. The adapter had worked well and has enabled me to recover all my data and to provide archives. Care must be taken not to let the old hard drive overheat when in use. Accordingly I turn on the adapter with the connected hard drive on a well ventilated location.

Comments about Cables To Go USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter:

Needed to access data (that didn't get backed up) on an internal IDE HD. Connected cables & was able to access most of my data (unfortunately some sectors were corrupted). I appreciated the ability to access the HD via USB rather than trying to connect it internally. The manual was a bit sparse, but it only took a few seconds to figure out how to connect the cable. Could not dismount the drive via the tool bar once the HD was installed and mounted, so I just restarted my OS. I am very happy overall with the product.

What a great product! When I closed my small business 7 years ago, I yanked all the hard drives out of my computers. I recently opened up the business again and discovered IDE disk controllers have disappeared from the market. I was expecting a large fee from a service bureau to recover my data until I discovered Cables to Go's simple and Cheap! solution. I highly recommend this product for recapturing data from old drives. I archived the data from 8 IDE and 2 laptop drives in about half an hour. Problem solved!

For years I futzed with a drive harness that was inconvenient, fragile and cumbersome. Not the case with the Cables-To-Go drive adapter. Works great, appears to be well made and the price is right. It paid for itself immediately. I don't really have anything negative to say, so I won't make something up just to appear more objective. I'll finish by saying . . . "Buy this drive adapter should you want to put those spare internal drives to good use . . . or should you be required to attempt extracting data from a drive previously thought dead or persnickety.

I ended up with an IDE drive when my antique computer motherboard died. Well I hated to toss it so I looked around and found a good price and reputation at Cables to go. For a few bucks I simply connected up, as per easy instructions, and low and behold I had another 18 gigs of memory to use. The real pay off were the old family pictures I had forgotten even existed! Yeah, buying the adaptor cable was well worth it.

I needed this to rescue data off of an odd Hitachi drive designed specifically for IBM laptops. Everything plugged right in, was recognized by my other computer, and worked perfectly.

Having the USB connection was MUCH more convenient than having to open up the case on my desktop to find an open IDE or SATA connection. It also works great for using a spare laptop drive (or whatever drive you have laying around) as an external unit. You just have to be a little more careful with it than using an enclosure and don't put anything too critical on it.

Comments about Cables To Go USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter:

I bought this product to try and save information off of my malfunctioning/dead laptop hard drive. After trying [@] (worst customer service experience of my life) and Dell (my laptop's brand) we found a link to Cables To Go on a "How To" guide for transferring information. I called in and spoke to two people, the first person felt I needed to speak to the Tech department to verify what part I would need. By the end of my conversation I felt very confident in the product I was getting.Once it arrived I hooked it up and it did what it was meant to do--the problem was my hard drive was unbalanced so it couldn't do everything it was trying to. I have no doubt that if the hard drive was in better condition and *could* be read that this product would have done exactly what I needed it to.

Have used this little dandy several times to recover and or transfer data from a variety of hard drives. It eliminates the need to mount the hard drive inside an external or internal case. Works on eSata, IDE & notebook type hard drives. If you want to be really slick buy a set of the rubber cases also. Makes the set up a little more secure when recovering HD partitions.

At first I wasn't sure if this is what I needed to get the data off of a hard drive with a corrupted Windows registry, but I gave it a shot anyway. Trust me, this is exactly what you need if you have a problem hard drive OR are switching from PC to Mac. I pulled the drive out of my PC and hooked the cable up. (You don't have to remove the drive. The cables are long enough.) I connected the SATA/USB cable to the drive and to my Mac (and, later to my PC too!). It has both SATA & IDE connections, so it connects to pretty much every modern day drive. I connected the power and turned it on. (It has a built-in power switch.) Worked perfectly. Both my PC and Mac recognized the drive. ANY computer that has a USB connection was able to "see" the drive and I was able to copy files off the damaged drive. Even if you back up your drive, there are probably files you haven't backed up and this cable is really worth it when you are looking for those files. You don't need any software or techno expertise, just the ability to plug one thing into another. (The connectors only fit one way.) Took five minutes tops. This will save you a panicked trip to the geeks. You can use this cable to transfer your PC files to a Mac, if you are in the process of switching. I copied everything (documents, email, address book, photos, music, videos, etc.) from my PC over to my new Mac. Buy it.

Great internal hard drive to external hard drive converter. Unfortuneatly, i cannot connect my xbox 360 hard drive to it which was a downside. The ide adapter didn't work with an old hard drive which was another downside. Overall, it does the purpose advertised. The ide hard drive i had wasn't suppose to work anyway. I just thought that it would be more universal to connect my xbox 360 hard drive to it. Fast transfers. I transfered 40gb in about an hour and a half which is pretty fast. It comes with a power adapter with the 4 pin molex plug and sata power plug so you can power a sata hard drive or any device that uses a 4 pin molex for power. The adapter came with a switch so you can shut off the drive when your not using it. This can save a lot of power and a lot of hard drives from overheating.

We have had this device on our workbenches and have added two more. No more plugging drives in to a skeleton machine to make the necessary connections. this device connects them all to a usb, the new multi-head power connector is a great blessing also.

My laptop hard drive failed and had to be replaced. That means all the pictures that I had backed up onto my laptop would be lost. I purchased the adapter and connected it to my removed hard drive and was able to retrieve my pictures. What a relief. Now I intend to purchase an internal hard drive [ for a PC ]but use it as an external and with the adapter use it as a back up drive. Thanks Cables to Go.

Comments about Cables To Go USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter:

I had high hopes for this product and it did not disappoint!!! Our old Gateway computer just stopped running one day ... possibly as a result of a massive electrical/rain storm the north east had in Nov/Dec 2008 ... lights and other electronic equipment seemed possessed ... going on and off ... repeatedly ... even though all of our electronics are on surge protectors, when turned on after that, our old gateway would not boot up nor would it turn off ... only the fan seemed to work ... went searching for Drive Adapters but most others had that Mission Impossible feature to them where the drive you were trying to rescue started smoking a few minutes after being hooked up to their faulty power supply.

Many thanks to those reviewers who praised this product. THEY WERE RIGHT"!!! I connected the old gateway's hard drive to the Drive Adaptor and then to the computer and there it was! Actually, there was a 60-90 second delay between plugging the adapter in to my IMAC and my old hard drive appearing in my Finder window. In fact, at first I thought it didn't work because the drive was fried (which was very much a possibility) ... but after waiting about a minute or so, there it was with all my old files. I am Soooooo Haaaaaapppppppyyyyy!!!!!!!! Thanks Cables to Go for Saying what you mean and Meaning what you say about the quality of your products. It's so sad that competence is so rare these days ... but not here!!! It just works!

Hey Incompetent Drive Adaptor Companies - Is that too much to ask in exchange for our hard earned money? Hope Cables to Go puts you out of business where you belong.

I recently junked a six year old PowerMac, but wanted to make sure I did not lose the data. No longer having an updated version of the OS I needed to run it, nor a monitor/keyboard combo to access it, I purchase the USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter. I removed the hard disk from the PowerMac and recycled the system at with chain retailer for free.

The adapter allowed me to access the disk from my MacBook Pro and copy the data without a glitch. Now that the data is safe, I can destroy the hard disk and be comfortable that I have not lost data and no one else can access it without my permission.

Laptop's Toshiba hard drive failed. Lost boot sector, etc. Found software to reconstruct hard drive data and needed hardware (cables) to connect to various laptops and desktops to transfer iPod and other critical files. Initially questioned these cables because picture only showed EIDE connection. Assured by rep that they also contained the SATA connection. Received cables and they are absolutely perfect and functioning as required. One of the transfers is in process as I write this review.

This Thing Rocks!

I use it for all types of applications. I primarily use it for my job to recover files that are on a corrupted OS or to format hard drives really easily.

I also use it for other fun things like backing up my PS3 with my spare hard drives.

This thing detects really fast on Windows 7 Professional and PS3.

The thing I like most about it, is its draws power from one source and you do not have to use a molex to sata adapter.

Other cheapo USB readers require this.

That was usually the highest point of failure in this type of device.

Turning it on and off with the switch is an added perk.

You can leave this thing plugged into the wall and use it when necessary.

This thing is great for all you "convenience-enthusiasts" out there.

I use this to get easy access to the boxes of old hard drives I have laying around. In Ubuntu, partitions mount automatically if recognized. Comments about Cables To Go USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter:

Wonderful product to have in a technician's bag of tools. I have a cheaper USB to IDE adapter which has begun not to work very well, bought this as a replacement as well as to add SATA support. The first drive I used it on was a SATA laptop HDD, WD Scorpio Blue with a damaged primary NTFS partition. Hooked up as a secondary drive, no computer I have would boot to it's own installation of Windows off another drive, instead it would hang at start-up. If I unplugged this drive from an otherwise good system, Windows would continue to load off the primary hard drive. Knoppix loaded and mounted the partitions, but saw this particular partition as having no files or folders, even after running NTFSFIX. Clonezilla failed to load with this drive attached. Knowing this adapter was en route, I put off the diagnosis for a couple days, and when it came in I hooked it up to a Windows 7 machine that would hang when this drive was plugged in via on board SATA. It let me see the partition and its contents, and run CHKDSK on it. Will know in a few hours if GetBackData can retrieve info from the corrupt user folders, but it looks promising.

I absolutely love the fact that there is an in-line power switch. Other similar tools I have used have not had this.

My guess is those giving it negative reviews may have only tried this on one drive, which may or may not have had other problems. I have tried this on several good drives with no issues, and even drives with known issues have good success being read by Windows or Linux using this adapter.

Service & Delivery comments:

Ordering direct from CTG, I have always had everything packaged well and arrive in good condition. No complaints.

Without this tool, I would have to open up machine after machine until I found one I could slap a clients' HD in to recover data, making sure to have a running box from every hardware generation and configuration. This is time consuming and frustrating. I knew there HAD to be a better way, and this is it. You can hook up ANY SATA or IDE (desktop or laptop) drive (HD or DVD/CD) to your USB port and use it as a USB drive. Many time saving applications. I love it!

attempted to retrieve documents off my dead laptop hard drive. Could not gain access to anything. If you think your hard drive has mechanical failure like mine (I did a hard shut down when windows froze, probably damaging the platter etc,) then it may not work for you. But it was worth a shot nonetheless.3 stars for detecting drive and simple installation.

Cables To Go Response: This product will not work on drives that have a mechanical problem on them. We believe that for this instance there was a known problem with the drive and it was not recognizing the drive.

This device is perfect for those of you who need to extract important documents, files and photos from a virus infected hard drive. I simply removed the hard drive, attached the adapter, copied the files to an external hard drive via USB then re-inserted the drive back into the computer. I reloaded windows (clean install) back on to the drive and then transfered the files back once I got the operating system functional again. Everything worked perfectly. This unit is extremely easy to use and much less expensive than the alternative!

Comments about Cables To Go USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter:

I am an M.D./Ph.D who is very computer savy. I purchased the CablesToGo product as a second IDE-to-USB adapter to keep in my office so I could connect my old backup hard drives which have lots of important patient data on them(all PC/windows XP based). I have a 20 GB Winchester hard drive from an old Gateway desktop which was Windows formatted in FAT32. Using my old ide-to-USB adapter, this hard drive links/works perfectly with any and all of my three desktop and two laptop PC's. However, when using my brand new CablesToGo product, the same drive, while initially recognized by all the same computers, fails to be assigned a drive letter in Windows explorer (thus it can't be used....and the Windows disk management can not see the external hard drive at all!). Switch back to my old ide-to-USB adapter, and the drive is again recognized, assigned a drive letter, seen as a healthy FAT32 formated drive (single partition) in disk managment, and fully operational. The CablesToGo product just won't work with this otherwise completely healthy hard drive. Importantly, the instructions that come with the product warn that this exact situation can occur "if a drive has a bad Windows partition (which mine clearly doesn't), has faulty data (which mine clearly doesn't), is formatted in NTSF (mine is in FAT32), is defective (which mine clearly isn't) or was formatted by third party software" (I haven't a clue what that means). Either way, this product seems electronically more sophisticated than my old adapter, as it has more lights, bells and whistles on it. This is not necessarily a good thing, as the CablesToGo adapter clearly doesn't work for me at all...and I seriously know what I am doing. I would avoid this product unless you are working with very new (sata level) hard drives. I would like to keep this product, so I would really appreciate some useful feedback from the CablesToGo tech reps. Thus far I'm completely dissatisfied.

Service & Delivery comments:

Purchased from Amazon.com. Delivery prompt, but shipping package was very flimsy, obviously torn and retapped during UPS shipping and the product box inside was slightly smashed. No obvious damage to internal contents, but shipping package should have been much sturdier (perhaps a box instead of a thin, bubble wrap envelope).

Poor instructions. Sales ad fails to mention that the instructions tell you that there are times when it won't work. File types, formatting issues, partitioning, all can cause problems which the instructions say there is "no practical workaround". I have a box of drives and it has only "seen" a few. Also, instructions are weak. Fail to address questions like do Jumper settings matter?

I have been using Network Storage whenever I needed to back up a hard drive for repairing family laptops. I always worry about the security of the information while it was stored. With this cable, it is faster than over the network and I no longer need to worry about the security. I can also use any hard drive that I have on hand. It was recognized easily by Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Although there isn't alot of support information about the connectors, if you take the time to look at your equipment to determine which connector is power and which is data, there's no problem! It even has a power switch on the power line so you don't have to disconnect it at the plug when you want to power off the hard drives.

I would also like to add that CablesToGo has been a great site to find any cable you might be looking for. Great diagram of end connectors so there is no guess work!

Comments about Cables To Go USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter:

When my NetGear external dual drive unit went belly up, I had written off the drives as unusable. Then I got my [...] "magic" IDE to USB "cable". "Magic" because it was simply unheard of before this, plug it together and it works, and "Cable" because that is an understatement. This is a dream device for anyone with old PC's and useless drives laying around. The drive comes up as if its a thumbdrive, and then I could format it and quickly put it back to use. I even used my old drive enclosure to tuck the power unit away while my drive sits right next to it. When I get rid of old PC's, I can quickly "scrub" those old drives clean without messing with the old computer. Now I can grab the whole thing in an emergency as I head out the door with a complete portable backup. Cool. I even tried to connect a 5 inch Seagate 20mb 225 from an IBM PCXT!!! circa 1990! But alas, that was just too old to deal with and the cables didn't match up. I'm sending one to my brother, he's a tech nut. Highly recommended.

I bought this to pull data off of hard drives from old computers. It has a USB-to-IDE cable and an external plug-in power supply designed to power standard drives. Use is pretty much automatic: you plug it in and turn it on. It worked very well on IDE drives (I didn't test the other options). It sometimes took a couple of tries to get the drive to be recognized by the computer (hence only 4 stars). Once recognized, the data transfer seems fast. Very nice solution.

This device worked exactly as I needed. I am not a skilled technician, and another hard drive failure was unexpected (10 months old), but the horrible inconvenience was greatly diminished by using this adapter. I was not only able to capture everything I needed from the failed drive, but went through a box full of other failed drives in my collection. The adapter accessed every failed hard drive except two that were ancient. I recovered files I thought were lost years ago. Like seeing old friends again. I saved a lot of money that would have otherwise been spent at the local computer repair shop. Works perfectly and saves tons of money. What could be better? The finest piece of rescue gear ever!

Wonderful cable - was able to recover files quickly. Was not able to mount the bad drive on my PC as it had a bad windows partition, but worked great on my Mac, was able to copy all the files needed to get the user back up and running after the BSOD. Would definitely recommend this cable for any IT professional.

Comments about Cables To Go USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter:

I am using it to access files from my old computer Hard Drive while I configure and transfer the files I need to keep on my "new" computer. I don't want all the junk files I have collected on the new machine, but I don't want to take the time to sort all the files before moving. This way I have my old drive as an external but readily accessible location for the files I need as I make the transition to the new machine.
One negative issue: while testing the cable I tried several old Hard Drives I had lying around and it only worked on the fully functional ones. i.e. If a drive wasn't formatted it wasn't recognized.
It works for me . . .

My PC computer crashed. I did not know if it was the hard drive or motherboard. I connected the hard drive with the usb to my laptop computer and the hard drive was working perfectly. I then downloaded some of my most important files to my laptop. I can now use the setup to transfer files from hard drive to my new computer. I might even use the old hard drive as an 80GB backup for my new computer through the usb port.

Very handy product. CD/DVD Drive, Floppy, or IDE/SATA all easy via USB. Saved a couple old hard drives, confirmed one was shot, ended up with an external 500GB backup drive. Works on all OSes so far. (Win?\Linux). Likely be great to make use of a floppy or cd drive on a machine without one.

I ordered this two days ago and got it via UPS today. I opened the box, conected the IDE adapter to my HDD, plugged the four pin power supply adapter to the HDD, plugged the power supply in, and connected the device to my computer USB port. In less than a minute, I was looking at Windows Explorer and my HDD via the new adapter. Two minutes later, I was backing up my computer HDD to the external HDD via the adapter.

Great device and great service.

Comments about Cables To Go USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter:

My son's laptop drive fell prey to a virus that mandated its removal and insertion into a desktop system for cleaning and quarantine. Since the IDE connectors were not compatable, I purchased the Cables-To-Go adaptor. It worked perfectly for this application, and also has the provision for most other types of drive connector platforms. I was impressed by the design flexibility as well as its construction; especially in today's cheap 'throw-away' society.
Keep up the good work....
Dan

The reviews on this product were so good, I thought the owner's mom was writing them (just kidding). So I decided to give it a try. This is as compatable and well-built as the reviews say.One of the big problems with adapters etc. is cheesy flimsy wires and connecters. That is NOT the case here. A very nice product, works as advertised,[...]. A good deal.

I purchased this product to get data from a laptop that had a bad motherboard. I was originally going to get an adapter that fit just this hd but decided to spend a little more and get the USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter for its versatility for future problems.

The adapter worked flawlessly, allowing me to get my daughters data off her hd and on to her new computer.

I also plan to use the adapter to get data off an older pc's hd without having to open up 2 pc's and finagle with master/slave settings.

Before I purchased this device it took removing the HD and opening my case and attempting to connect the bad drive internally to my PC, this changes all of this. Absolutely love it portable powerful and fast best thing in a while.

This allows me to do it any time I need for 1/5 the cost.
